The Presbyterian Church of Cadiz, so named in July 1984, has a long and complicated history that dates back to the 1800's and involves two mergers. Our present church was formed in 1967 with the merger of two major Presbyterian groups: Grace United Presbyterian Church and Trinity United Presbyterian Church.

The Grace United Presbyterian Church was originally called the First United Presbyterian Church, and resulted from a merger of the Associate Reformed Church (1806) and the Associate Presbyterian Church (1813). The first church building of the newly formed church was constructed in 1868 at the corner of South Main and West Warren Streets. That building was destroyed by fire on February 5, 1944, and the building which replaced it was dedicated in September of 1952. It was in 1962 that the First United Presbyterian Church formally became the Grace United Presbyterian Church.

The Trinity United Presbyterian Church, so named in 1958, organized as the First Presbyterian Church in 1817, although there had been a congregation as early as 1804. In 1832, a two-story brick church building was constructed at what is now the corner of West Market and Muskingum streets. In 1869, a new and larger structure was erected with a 171 foot spire. This tower was toppled May 31, 1888 by high winds. Damage due to tornados occurred twice more over the years: once on October 4, 1942, and again on July 14, 1954, the latter of which caused part of the roof to fall into the sanctuary.

When the two Presbyterian Churches in Cadiz merged in 1967, they elected to retain the larger, albeit older of the two buildings as their place of worship. In 1994, a new office and classroom building was constructed on the adjacent property as an addition to the main building. It is these two buildings that serve the church today.

In 1977 a manse, located on Locust Lane, was purchased as the home of Dr. William H. Hudson, who moved to Cadiz as minister with his family.  He remained over 27 years retiring in April 2005.  The church's secretary, Louine Hamilton, worked many of those same years retiring in April 2003 to aid the mission of the church.

The Rev. Robert J. "RJ" Leek began his ministry in Cadiz in January 2008.   Under his leadership, the Church has initiated a growing youth program and contemporary worship service.

A note about the stained glass window: The window above the chancel that graces the sanctuary was made by Tiffany and Company. It was originally commissioned for a church in Pittsburgh that was being built about the same time as the church in Cadiz. But the church in Pittsburgh rejected the window; reportedly because the opening was not the correct size. Members of the church in Harrison County learned about the window and managed to procure it for their own building. In 2000, the window was temporarily removed and sent away for full restoration.

Additional information is available in a booklet, 175 Years 1817-1992 which was compiled for the 175th Anniversary in October 1992.
